Chase Freedom Flex Card – New Benefits
The Freedom Flex card packs quite the punch compared to the original Freedom card. Here is a full look at everything the Freedom Flex card has to offer to help you decide if it is a good fit for you.
Freedom Flex Card Earning
Here’s a breakdown of the cash-back rates of the Freedom Flex card.
Category | Freedom Flex |
Rotating Quarterly Bonus Categories (up to $1,500 in spend) | 5% |
Travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards | 5% |
Dining (including delivery services) | 3% |
Drugstores | 3% |
All other purchases | 1% |
As you can see, the Freedom Flex offers significantly improved earning potential by adding 3 new bonus categories, while keeping the original feature that made the original Freedom card so unique — 5% back on rotating bonus categories like gas and Amazon purchases.
In my view, the two most welcomed additions here are the ability to earn 3% back on dining and drugstore purchases, the latter of which is offered on very few cards.
Card Perks
Chase is switching the payment processor from Visa to Mastercard, offering up a handful of new benefits to cardholders via the Mastercard World Elite program. Here are the best benefits you can expect from the Freedom Flex card:
- Earn 5% cash-back on Lyft rides
- Get a complimentary 3 months of DoorDash DashPass
- Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty Protection
- Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance
- Cell Phone Protection (up to $800 per claim)
Furthermore, all of your cash-back will be earned in the form of Chase Ultimate Rewards points. Meaning those who have a premium Chase card, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve, and prefer pooling their points together to redeem for travel rewards will still be able to do so.
Future of the Chase Freedom Card
If you’re a current Chase Freedom cardholder, you’re likely wondering “What is happening to my Chase Freedom card?”.
The short answer is nothing. While the card will no longer be available for new applicants to apply for, you’re free to continue using it as you were before with the standard earn rates.
With that said, you’ll almost certainly be better off by calling Chase and product changing your Freedom to the Freedom Flex card. Keep in mind that product changes cost nothing and do not result in a hard pull to your credit. It’s worth noting that, since the Freedom Flex card is a new product, you could also opt to apply for it outright so that you can receive the sign-up bonus.
Final Thoughts
It’s been some time since we’ve had any good news in the world of credit card rewards, but these changes are generally great all around. The Freedom Flex card is now much more rewarding than the Freedom card ever was, and comes along with way more perks, all for the same $0 annual fee.
